Trash the Dress Riviera Maya Style
Posted by Brenda Lopez, CEO & Founder - AffluentBride.comAre you game? Have you? Will you? Well this bride did and I must say they definitely picked an unusual place to do it.
Ahhhh….the Riviera Maya, MX. I guess if you’re going to trash your OWN wedding dress, you may as well do it in true Mayan style.
I think I could live with it better that way!!!
OK. I must admit…I know it’s the trend right now and maybe one that is here to stay but I am one of those that sort of CRINGES everytime I watch one of these. Especially when it’s such a pricey wedding gown…. GULP! Yes, a times I find that a bit hard to swallow LOL But let’s be honest, I am, afterall, among friends here … do we REALLY think we’ll EVER wear it years from now?
Rule number one, FIRST you have to fit in it again and SECONDLY, all good intentions aside, if you’re thinking about getting it preserved, so you can pass it on as a relic LOL for your own daughter to wear, some 18 years out, well it’s generally not going to be in style enough for them and they probably wouldn’t want to be caught dead in it!!!
All I have to do is view my own nicely preserved gown, which is a bit dated now and wonder, what planet was on on THEN? HA! Besides, there is is such an influx of new couture designer gowns every year, I’d personally just opt for something new. No offense mom...
But times have changed and I have to say that even I, have become quite intrigued by all this. From videographers to cinematographers, as well as photojournalists to photographers, this has surely given a new meaning to self expression and quite frankly some videos and photos I have seen are quite artistically stunning indeed. So I guess if you are going to TRASH the DRESS, you may as well do it with pizzazz!
And you never know, it might not be as badly trashed afterwards, as you think….however, I wouldn’t count on it. But at least you’ll have fun in the process.
I guess we could officially call the Trash the Gown crowd… Wedding Trashers….LOL
I don’t know about you but even though I did not officially trash my own couture wedding dress years ago, it looked pretty trashed by the time we got through the ceremony, reception and limo ride. Oh and I STILL had to preserved for those sentimental reasons. I know I’ll never wear it again, who am I kidding?? But it at least it still looks good in the box. Not much consolation!
It’s only money, right?
So what are your plans? Trash or officially PASS?
If you are planning to trash it, what did you have in mind? Oh this is going to be good! I can’t wait to hear the responses we get on this one!
No matter what you decide, the above video represents a beautiful way to have your gown go out in style!! I’d prefer that over a MUD sling any day!

Hello Affluent Brides!
I really had to comment on this one… as it’s something I personally plan to do, in February 2008. However to put a twist to all this, we are avid skiers and our honeymoon will be be spent in Canada in the Mont-Tremblant region.
I’ll let your imagination run with that one for awhile, but it WILL involve lots and lots of snow! My gown is coming at a pricetag of $4K and so its definitely something I was a bit unsure of, in the beginning, but my photojournalist has something uniquely planned and assures me it will be very eloquent, in every sense.
If can remember I will be sure to post pics when we return. The dress may not be a total loss at the end but probably would hang in storage never to be worn again.
Love the Riviera Maya take on the trash the dress video. Beautifully done. This really does seem to be a growing trend.
Hey — thanks for checking out my blog!! LOVE yours too!! (put you on my blogroll for others to check out)
As a comment to this post, I can 100% being nervous to “TTD”, but I can’t tell you how absolutely EXCITING it is! It’s something I did and I had the absolute TIME of my life. It was an incredible rush to get all dolled up and play in the dirt. My photographer, MOH, and I went out into the desert and did a TTD session on my husband’s (Fiance at the time) dune toys. At first I was a little nervous to get it dirty, but in the end I had an AMAZING time!! AMAZING!! Later I made a 3 minute montage for him as a wedding gift and showed it at our wedding. People LOVED it!!
It was so amazing actually, I am putting together a charitable TTD session here in Phoenix called “Brides Making Strides” where we are walking for the American Cancer Society in our wedding gowns. I can’t WAIT! Check it out … http://www.BridesMakingStrides.com
I’ll post pictures on my blog afterwards!!!
Kim, that is wonderful. What a great cause. Yes let us all know when the pics are up. .
I love that video, the couple will have amazing pictures and isn’t that what really matters, not the dress in a box? I plan on being a Trasher!! Just not sure how to do it and when? Obviously they set it up after the wedding and reception! Any ideas?
This deconstruction wedding dress photo shoot is simple beautiful!
It is a spectacular setting after all.
I don’t think it would work as well in some ones swimming pool in the suburbs.
Another thing is to pass on ones dress to a thrift shop for some one who may not be able to afforded a dress as beautiful as yours.
The Light House in NYC offers this via a donation.

Great tips Nancy, thanks for passing those along.
I have to agree, most residential pools don’t offer the same type of ambiance or backdrop, as it’s the setting that really works for this one. And of course it always pays to have an experienced photographer with experience in this area, since it’s not like most brides have a backup gown….LOL..should the first shoot not come out as well as they’d hoped.
