It’s no secret that there are few other elements of a wedding that can make or break the entire celebration other than the music. And it’s for this reason why discriminating brides and grooms often lose countless hours of sleep deciding on their entertainment.
The seemingly obvious choice for an upscale wedding is to hire a live band; however that can cause strife with those couples who really appreciate hearing the music the way they’ve heard it, by the original artists. Of course the next logical choice is to research a great dj. However, finding a dj is no walk in the park, since even celebrity dj’s may not often click with the type of music that you may feel is more appropriate for your crowd. In fact, in certain circles, even mentioning the words “Disc Jockey” is equivalent to serving six foot heroes for dinner.
So what’s a modern couple to do? Hire both?

Premier Charleston bridal boutiques and local bridal designers showcase an array of dazzling wedding gowns at the first annual Bridal Couture runway show during Charleston magazine’s Charleston Fashion Week 2008. The show, presented by Charleston Weddings magazine, features gowns from Copper Penny Bridal and Gown Boutique of Charleston, as well as inspired original dresses by area designers Jodi Moylan of White, and Kate Nevin alongside tuxedos from Charleston Formal Wear at Berlin’s.
On Saturday, March 29, discover a multitude of styles and designers during the Bridal Couture show, including whimsical dresses by Monique Lhuillier and Spanish silk and Chantilly lace frocks by Barcelona-based designer Manuel Mota. Also appearing on the runway are Badgley Mischka gowns that radiate old Hollywood glamour, Renella de Fina’s modern twists on classic style, and Jenny Packham’s beaded masterpieces.
Sip mimosas, enjoy light hors d’oeuvres, and snag some glamorous door prizes that every bride-to-be would adore, all while watching models whisk down the runway donning an array of elegant bridal gowns. No need to bring anything old, new, borrowed, or blue.
The second annual Charleston magazine’s Charleston Fashion Week is a five-night celebration of the city’s flourishing retail and design community, featuring runway shows from more than 30 local retailers, the bridal couture show, and the debut of six local designers. With close to 100 designers presented, chic after-parties each night, and a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Charleston chapter of Dress for Success, this year’s Charleston Fashion Week will be the “haute”-est event of the season. The one thing that we have and treasure for generations is our family’s wedding photographs. Photographs are quite possibly the single most valuable possession you ever purchase. How can you be sure this is a valid investment? Just watch the news on any given night. In the wake of fires, floods, or other natural disasters there is only one thing that families and individuals cling to and risk their life to protect, and that one thing is a photograph.
It’s amazing how looking through our parents or grandparents wedding albums or photographs on the wall takes us back in time, giving us a glimpse of a different era. I have been photographing weddings for over a decade and so many things have changed in that time. But the one thing that will never change is the value we put on our memories and our families. Now that we are in a digital age, as photographers, we have so many great choices for brides and grooms. With that said, today more than ever, it is important to seek out an artist that fits your style.
The excitement of digital photography has generated many newcomer photographers to the industry. While competition can be a good thing that drives prices down, a wedding is that one special occasion that you don’t want to risk at the hands of an unseasoned professional. It is important to see full wedding stories and be confident before you sign on the dotted line that you will receive photographs that will not only bring out your best attributes, but also tell your story.
Communication is key when working with wedding professionals, but it’s especially true when it comes to photography. Words can’t always express a feeling or a style. So, sharing photographs that you like in magazines can be a good way to communicate with clarity.
